Collective nouns

Sometimes when I hear some English speak, they just don’t speak ‘properly’ but it is down to the differences in how we build our sentences.

In British English their collective nouns can be singular or plural. Such as the team were on their way, the team is here to stay. The collective noun, were, is used with plural nouns and is used with singular nouns.

In American English, the nouns usually act as singular nouns. The group take their coats not the group takes its coats.
