If my baby is born in the UK, are they British?

This comes up often in the FB groups that I am so I thought I would discuss it here.

Being born in the UK does not automatically make you British unless you were born before 1 January 1983. After that date, you have to have one parent who is a British citizen. So Bug is a British citizen because she was born in the UK and her dad (and mom as of February) are British.

If you have your baby in the UK while you are stationed here, they are not entitled to become a British citizen but if you end up living here for the first 10 years of their life (being out of the country for no more than 90 days per year), they may then be able to become a British citizen even if both of their parents are not British or settled which requires an Indefinite Remain to Leave or other settlement visa.
